Soft as Suede
The base component, which holds the mousing surface in place, is made from Soft-Feel Hard Plastic.  And the base incorporates 'finger holes' which allow you to quickly and easily flip the surface sheet over.

The new (and improved) mouse cord clip is made from a higher-grade plastic and grips the base better than ever.
